FAQ

Q: Why only one song at a time?

A: On our busiest nights, we can often get upwards of 35 song requests in the rotation, meaning a queue of people about 2 hours long that all want to sing a single song.  If our karaoke show is only 4.5 hours long, you will only get to sing 1, maybe 2 songs depending on how long you plan on staying. It would be unfair of 1 person to submit multiple requests for songs, thus making them unavailable for anyone else to sing as we do not repeat songs over the course of the night. 1 song, per person, per rotation is the fairest way to make songs more available to everyone.

Q: Why do duets (and groups) count as both people's (everybody's) turn?

A. This rules is in effect to prevent any one person or group from boggarting the mic. It is unfair that a person or persons should get to sing more times in a single rotation than everybody else who has been waiting patiently to sing a single song.

(for example: if A, B, C, and D. All put songs in and they all get up to sing each other's songs, that means A, B, C, and D have now sung 4 times more than everybody else.)

Imagine going to a bar, really wanting to sing a song, and you see the same person or group come up and sing 4 songs and you haven't gotten to sing once yet..... that just wouldn't be a fun time now would it? We're not about that. We WANT you to have fun. So we gotta be fair!

Q: I know the person singing, why can't I jump in and join them?

A: The short answer: It's rude.

It is never okay to jump in on somebody else's song, regardless if you know them or not.  ALL SINGERS DESERVE THEIR OWN TIME IN THE SPOTLIGHT. Not only do you steal their spotlight, but you disrupt the fairness of the rotation.

Q: What do you mean 'Be kind to the equipment'?

A: The mics and the speakers are expensive. Hitting or dropping the mics can damage the inner workings. Blowing or screaming into the mic can damage the speakers.

There is a big green light on the side microphone, if the light is on, the mic is on.

Q: What do you mean you 'mix the mic to my voice'?

A: Everybody's voice is different. Whether you sing high, low or somewhere in between, at the Carriage House, we want you to feel and sound like a rock star! Here are some tips to make you sound your best!

1. Don't cup the mic!!! For 3 major reasons

a) it muffles your voice and makes it impossible to get clean tones

b) it cuts off your all your high and mid levels

c) since it cuts off your volume, we have to over compensate by turning your mic up. The second you remove your hand, you may blast out half the bar!!!

So make sure to keep your hands UNDER the mic guard.

2. Don't sing under your breath. The mic can't pick up any of your notes if you aren't projecting them. We can only turn you up so much before the mic feeds back into the speakers.

3. Don't put your mouth on the mic either. Not only because of the germs (yes, you will get sick even though we sanitize in between EVERY SINGER) but it also makes it impossible to mix your voice. At that level of closeness, the only thing the mic is going to pick up is your percussive breath making the mic and speakers POP! Your voice will be all bass, muffled, and incredibly loud.
